Why is health important ?

Does anyone ever like it if they are ill and are unable to carry out their daily life activities, such as going to work or playing? Definitely not! No one wants to be sick but even though we try so hard, still sometimes we may fall ill. It may be due to various causes, from changes in weather to bacterial or viral infections. We never know until we start to display the symptoms of illness. Only when we have fallen sick, do we actually realize the value and importance of health. As goes the popular saying ”Only in the absence of something, we come to understand, how important it was to us”.

Our bodies are designed by nature to function in a proper and well-organized manner. Each organ of the body is designated to a specific function. Thinking and coordination are the jobs of the brain, the heart pumps blood, blood is filtered and urine is produced by the kidneys, lungs do the breathing, and so on. All these activities require energy which we get from food. Hence, once you fall ill, this smooth functioning of the body is hindered which results in serious complications.

Now for the technical definition of health, as given by the WHO, “Health is the state of complete physical, mental and social well being”. There are many factors that determine whether or not a person is leading a healthy lifestyle. A well-balanced diet along with regular exercise, proper sleep-wake cycle, and hygienic living conditions. The previously mentioned factors are in correlation to the physical and mental health. However, the health of an organism depends on its surroundings too. A good social environment is also very important for the health of an individual.

Good health is the secret behind human happiness and well-being. It also contributes to the economic progress of the world, as healthy populations are more productive and they live longer. If a person stays healthy physically, he will stay healthy mentally too. Physical and mental health are interlinked. If we are able to keep our body fit and healthy by taking the right food and doing physical activates regularly, our body will definitely help us to deal with daily stress.

Your energy level is a reflection of your overall health and well being. The more energy you have, the more you will get done in your day and life. We all have the same amount of time in the day, so the difference between us can only be the energy we bring into each aspect of our life.

When you have low energy, it is difficult to express love and intimacy, support your family and consciously parent your children, perform at work if you are too tired to be productive, have fun with friends if you are dull and lethargic, learn and grow if your weak body has weakened your mind, have a sense of charity and contribution if ill health has you looking inwards rather than outwards on helping others.
